This is a 4-8 month temporary contract for a student attending a Canadian University. This is an in-person position located in St. Thomas.

  
 
Your role and key responsibilities

PowerCo Canada Inc. is building Volkswagen Group’s largest battery cell manufacturing facility in St. Thomas, Ontario, and is seeking a motivated Factory Planning, AI & Simulation Co-op to join its team. In this hands‑on developmental role, the selected candidate will contribute directly to the planning and optimization of a next‑generation battery production plant. The Co‑op student will support factory layout planning, BIM coordination, and simulation modeling to enable efficient, scalable, and future‑ready manufacturing operations. Responsibilities include developing 2D and 3D layouts, coordinating BIM models across engineering disciplines, and building simulation models for capacity and throughput analysis. This position provides exposure to advanced manufacturing planning, cross‑functional collaboration, and mentorship from experienced engineers. It represents an excellent opportunity for students seeking to apply strong analytical, technical, and organizational skills within a fast‑paced environment shaping the future of sustainable mobility.

The Co-op student will also support the identification, evaluation, and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to improve factory planning, simulation development, BIM coordination, and digital engineering workflows. The role will explore innovative approaches such as AI-assisted layout generation, simulation automation, data-driven decision support, and digital twin development to improve planning efficiency and manufacturing performance.

  
 
What you bring to the team

-Build high-level models using simulation software such as Siemens Plant Simulation and investigate AI-assisted model generation and validation approaches
-Run scenario analyses and leverage AI-assisted analytics to identify bottlenecks, optimization opportunities, and planning risks
-Collect and organize planning level data for capacity analysis  
-Perform capacity and throughput calculations 
-Support layout coordination and evaluate AI-enabled methods for 2D and 3D layout optimization, material flow analysis, and space utilization.
-Prepare summary reports, presentations and layout visual markups for project presentation and reviews
-Assist with quality control of 3D equipment models, placing equipment models within factory layout, and with clash management with tools such as Navisworks and Revit.
-Assist to keep models accurate and up-to-date, organize and maintain layout/BIM files and documentation.
-Deliver at least one proof-of-concept demonstrating how AI can improve factory planning efficiency, layout development, simulation creation, BIM coordination, capacity planning, or digital twin development.
-Quantify expected benefits and provide recommendations for future implementation within PowerCo planning processes.
-Research and evaluate AI applications for factory planning, BIM coordination, manufacturing simulation, and digital engineering.
-Identify opportunities to automate repetitive planning and modeling activities using AI tools.
-Support proof-of-concepts and pilot projects for AI-enabled planning solutions.
-Assess emerging technologies and recommend practical applications to improve planning efficiency and decision quality.

  
 
What makes you stand out

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Materials, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field in a Canadian institution. Preferably in a co-op program.

- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
-Interest in advanced manufacturing, industrial engineering, or production planning.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Basic understanding of technical drawings, process flows, or equipment layouts (AutoCAD/Revit/Navisworks/Siemens Plant Simulation exposure is a plus).
-Ability to work collaboratively in cross‑functional teams and communicate clearly.
-Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
-Willingness to learn new tools, processes, and documentation standards.
-Self‑driven, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced, evolving project environment.
-Strong interest in Artificial Intelligence, digital manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 technologies.
-Understanding of data analytics, automation, and machine learning concepts.
-Ability to evaluate emerging technologies and translate them into practical business applications.
-Strong analytical thinking and curiosity towards innovation and process improvement.
-Familiarity with simulation, CAD or 3D modeling tools is an asset
-Preferred experience in automotive or battery manufacturing
-Exposure to AI, machine learning, generative design, optimization algorithms, or digital twin concepts.
-Experience with Python, SQL, Power BI, Power Automate, Copilot technologies, or similar analytics tools.
-Familiarity with data-driven decision making and manufacturing optimization techniques.
-Familiarity with Siemens Plant Simulation, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, or other BIM/planning tools.
